Ferdinando Martini: his life
Ferdinando Martini, professor at the Scuola Normale in Pisa, was a playwright, poet, journalist, and writer. Furthermore, he became a Member of the Italian Parliament in 1876, where he remained for thirteen legislative sessions.
Having served as Minister of the Colonies and of Public Instruction in the first Giolitti government, Martini was later appointed senator. Around 1887, he had the architect Cesare Spighi design a splendid neo-Gothic villa that was constructed in the Renatico area, on the outskirts of Monsummano Terme. Today, the villa is the property of the Municipality of Monsummano. Bearing the name of Villa Renatico-Martini, it is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Twentieth Century.
